What is Prolotherapy?

Prolotherapy has been in practice dating back to 1937 when it was used on a thumb ligament to treat both pain and ligamentous laxity. Injections are used to stimulate the body’s healing response. They can sometimes be utilized in combination with or in place of regenerative medicine procedures and are often a great alternative to steroid injections. A solution containing hyperosmolar dextrose (often with a lidocaine derivative and/or normal saline) is used depending on the area and condition being treated and varies from patient to patient. This solution is thought to work by creating a hypertonic environment, stimulating the body to respond by upregulating platelet-derived growth factors (PDGF) which aid in the healing process. Prolotherapy is a great treatment for those suffering from a number of ligament and/or tendon issues such as tendonitis as it will help tighten and strengthen the connective tissues to each pain. It can also be great for athletes who have ACL or PCL injuries so that they can get back to doing what they love.

Different concentrations of the following are used for diagnostic injections as well as part of local anesthesia for various injection therapies:

This is a local anesthetic that is applied topically and that works by blocking nerve signals in your body to reduce pain. It can be used for conditions such as sunburns, insect bites, minor cuts and scrapes, and more.

This is a long-acting local anesthetic that can be used as a spinal block or epidural. Unlike Lidocaine which is administered topically, Ropivacaine is administered via an injection.

This is used as a local anesthetic that is given as an epidural injection into the spinal column to produce numbness. Although similar solutions, Bupivacaine is more potent then Ropivacaine.

Steroid Injections Alleviate Pain and Swelling

Steroids are commonly used to reduce inflammation, swelling, or pain in a target area. Depending on the area, condition, and situation, the steroids Dr. Nevo uses for injections typically include:

Kenalog (triamcinolone)

This is a corticosteroid hormone that works by decreasing your body’s immune response to certain diseases and to reduce symptoms such as swelling.

This is a corticosteroid used to treat conditions such as arthritis, breathing problems, certain cancer and more. It does this by decreasing the body’s natural defensive response and reduces symptoms such as swelling and allergic-type reactions.
