10 Steps to Improve Your Posture

Categories : Back Pain

One of the main causes of back pain is poor posture. Believe it or not, your posture has a lot to do with your overall health. Although correcting poor posture might be easier said than done, it should be considered. Poor posture can lead to a number of health concerns, other than back pain, including joint pain, muscle pain, poor circulation, headaches, decreased lung capacity, and fatigue.

At NESS – Nevo Sports and Spine, our professionals assess the conditions that may be causing you pain, like poor posture, and offer these tips on how to improve your posture at home.

The following steps will help you to realign your body and improve your posture so that you can prevent any discomfort or any of the health concerns listed above.

  1. Stand shoulder-width apart
  2. Take a deep breath in through your nose and exhale slowly through your mouth
  3. Shrug both shoulders up together
  4. Roll your shoulders all the way back while shrugged
  5. At the same time, drop both shoulders in this position (think about reaching for the floor)
  6. Slowly roll your neck side to side, then chin to chest and look upright, then in slow circles (first clockwise, then counterclockwise)
  7. Take nice slow breaths throughout as in #2
  8. Stand with your back against a wall. Make sure your shoulder blades are touching the wall.
  9. Place your index finger near your top lip and slowly pull away in a direction that combines backward and upwards movement (think of pulling away from a bad odor). Your chin should be in a slightly tucked position and you should feel a stretch in the back of your neck.
  10. Maintain nice slow breaths throughout as in #2

Correct posture can prevent serious problems from arising down the road and will also make you look taller and more confident.

Back pain due to poor posture can be irritating at first, but if your posture is not corrected it can develop into something more serious in the future. By making these small changes, you can avoid this as well as other health issues.

1 in 2 adults experiences disabling low back pain annually. Additionally, low back pain is a leading cause of disability in the United States. The causes of pain are numerous and each cause presents unique challenges. However, it is not necessary to accept back pain as a part of your life.
