Percutaneous Needle Tenotomies or, PNT, is helpful for treatment of degenerative tendon conditions called tendinopathy or tendinosis. Many pain conditions related to tendon are misclassified as tendinitis, which refers to inflammation involving the tendon. We have learned that what actually transpires in injuries such as “tennis elbow” is that the collagen fibers become disorganized rather than aligned in tight parallel orientation. This affects the tendon function in that it is less elastic and loses some of its tensile strength. Over time this can lead to pain and dysfunction, sometimes causing the tendon fibers to tear off of their insertion onto the bone.
How Do Percutaneous Needle Tenotomies Work?
PNT is a process where a needle creates small fenestrations in the tendon and bone attachment in order to stimulate increased blood flow, which is vital to send the healing cells to the site to aid in the repair and regeneration of the injured tendon.
Ultrasound-guided percutaneous needle tenotomy is a safe and effective treatment for chronic, recalcitrant tendinopathy, and has been associated with improvements in tendon morphology as seen on post-treatment ultrasound examinations.
