The use of ultrasound in clinical has revolutinised patient care. Ultrasound technology can be used for both diagnostic purposes as well as for need M guidance during procedures which is known to vastly improve accuracy, safety and efficacy.
Benefits of Ultrasound:
- Excellent resolution of soft tissues. Ultrasound technology has become quite advanced to the point where the resolution can surpass that of an MRI.
- Interactive and dynamic. The settings on the ultrasound machine can be instantly manipulated to optimize the structure(s) of interest. Furthermore, ultrasound is unique in that patient movement can be used to visualize pathology that a not present at rest.
- Portable and able to be performed at point of care. An ultrasound examination is often seamlessly integrated with the physical examination to provide a comprehensive and informed differential dignosis. Ultrasound images can also be used to support medical necessity claims.
- Ability to perform accurate and safe therapeutic intervention. Studies have shown that compared to “blind” unguided procedures, ultrasound-guided procedures have significantly better accuracy and efficacy. Direct live visualization during procedures allows unwanted structures, such as blood vessels or nerves, to be avoided.
- No radiation. CT scans and x-rays contain radiation, which is cumulative over one’s lifetime. Additionally, ultrasound is utilized over fluoroscopy (live x-ray) whenever feasible to avoid unnecessary radiation and delay in performing the intervention.
- No known contraindications. Ultrasound for diagnostic and procedural use has a very high safety profile.
